A Brent teacher has won the prestigious Global teacher award.

The global teacher award is a $1m (£720,000) presented by Varkey Foundation and the UAE Prime Minister.

Andria Zafirakou teaches Art and Textiles in Alperton Community College. Zafirakou is the first British teacher to win this award.

Zafirakou said “the teachers in the UK work extremely hard and this award goes out to everyone.”

“The schools can make a positive difference in children through creative subjects.”

She creates great bonds with her pupils and has even learnt basic greetings in a range of languages such as: Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil to ensure all pupils feel welcome in her classroom.
